Summer cable car in Ramsau am Dachstein

Experience new perspectives on the Dachstein glacier

The Dachstein - which has always been a place of longing for alpinists - is not "just" a mountain, but with its 2,995 metres a true mountain personality in the Austrian Alps. In 1969, the Dachstein glacier was opened up to tourists for the first time with the Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car. The mountain station has now been completely remodelled. The result: an "energy crystal" with a special feel-good atmosphere and fascinating new features:

Take time for a change of perspective:

➤ New catering offer for culinary summit victories
➤ Up to 80 % energy self-sufficient thanks to photovoltaic panelling
➤ New additional viewing platforms & photo hotspots
➤ New and expanded attractions & glacier highlights

We look forward to your visit from May 24th, 2024!

The glacier – the highlight of Styria

Even the ascent with the panoramic cable car of the Dachstein glacier railway is an experience in itself. The Dachstein massif seems close enough to touch. Once you arrive at the completely renovated mountain station at an altitude of 2,700 metres, you can't help but be amazed. "Take a deep breath and feel the energy of the mountains" - the newly created viewing platforms & attractions around the mountain station invite you to recharge your batteries:

  • Sky ladder: 12 steps up to a glass platform, from where a breathtaking view of the Dachstein opens up.
  • Stairway to nowhere: 14 narrow steps to the ultimate deep & wide view
  • Suspension bridge: Austria's highest suspension bridge promises thrills with a view
  • Skywalk: Breathtaking views of the Hohe Tauern and as far as Slovenia and the Czech Republic
  • Dachstein Ice Palace with new exhibition & ice sculptures
  • Digital binoculars with a view of the Koppenkarstein
  • Engagement spot for the perfect selfie with a view of the Dachstein
  • "Energy Crystal" art object near the mountain station

Attractions at and around the top station

The Dachstein Sky Walk is located directly at the Dachstein Gletscherbahn. The platform at 2,700 metres above sea level offers a panoramic view of the alpine mountain panorama and is one of the most spectacular viewing platforms in the Alps. The Dachstein suspension bridge – the highest suspension bridge in Austria – provides unforgettable memories with a tremendous view over the Alps. The feeling of pure freedom is there for the brave on the "stairway to nowhere", which lets guests "float" over the rocks. In the Dachstein Ice Palace, a mystical world of ice and snow awaits guests deep inside the glacier. The exhibition "Up on the mountains" can currently be admired.

Hiking paradise Dachstein

The Dachstein glacier also offers the perfect backdrop for unique glacier hikes. Whether it's a snowy walk to the “Seethalerhütte” hut, enjoying the spectacular panorama on the adventure trail “kleiner Gjaidstein” or a guided tour across the alpine glacier area, hiking enthusiasts have everything they could possibly desire.

Dachstein alpine region: The car park at the bottom station of the cable car is also an ideal starting point for hikes.  In the alpine region at an altitude of up to 1,900 m, you can hike either on leisurely trails or steeper climbs up to the vertically rising rock faces of the south walls of the Dachstein.

Culinary delights on the mountain

Glacier restaurant on the Dachstein

The glacier restaurant is located directly in the top station of the Dachstein glacier cable car lift. Not only the unique location and the ensuing panorama make it something very special, but also the border between the provinces of Styria and Upper Austria runs right through the middle of the restaurant.

Culinary highlights are provided by: specialties from the region, varied daily specials, snacks and tasty snack boards for in-between meals. The offer is complemented by a well-balanced salad and cake buffet.
