Going back and forth, over the mountain and back again.

Grossarltal

Going back and forth, over the mountain and back again. That is probably the charm of every ski lift. But even more so on the return journey of the tour. First, it goes over the Kreuzkogel over to Dorfgastein down to the bottom of the valley. Thousands of meters in one part! Then with the Gipfelbahn to the Fulseck and from there on the signposted road over to the Kieserl. (Pay attention: at the gondola mountain station, choose the first exit on the left of the building) The Kieserl will become the new turning point of the ski area Grossarltal-Dorfgastein. No surprise here, as it used to be the ‘great ski resort’ of the Grossarler. A short trip into the past – and at the same time into the future. Because here, in the foreseeable future, another mountain station with a kid’s adventure land, restaurant and great access to slopes will be opened. On beautiful natural snowy slopes we enjoy the current downhill run to the Roslehenalm and then take the ski-trail to the middle station in Grossarl and go futher down, into the valley.

Some well-deserved refreshments are available in the conservatory of Hotel Auhof, located next to the bottom station of the Panoramabahn. In the restaurant you can relax and enjoy the many views and watch the hustle and bustle in front of the valley station. After this adventure, taking a relaxed way down is very popular. By Post bus, ski bus or by car you can go to Hüttschlag and further into the picturesque valley. Peace and quiet determine the pace here at the Hohe Tauern National Park. The nicest way to go around the park is by riding in a horse-drawn carriage (registration required) or you can go for a 2 km long walk through the snow-covered wintery landscape past a game enclosure to the ötzlsee, past the Talwirt and the Bauernladernstüberl. The former one is most known for its ghoul mask exhibition in the basement and the national park exhibit ‘Bergwald’ on the first floor. For connoisseurs, the Bauernladernstüberl is a hot tip: here you can find the best cheese in Austria. In the summer of 2018, the family Aichhorn (‘Kreebauer’) from the Bauernladernstüberl, won the highest award, which is only given out every 2 years, of all the other marketers for the best cheese in Austria 2018 and 2019.

THE HOTSPOTS OF THE TOUR:

  • The return journey: First, it goes over the Kreuzkogel over to Dorfgastein down to the bottom of the valley. Thousands of meters in one part – that is good fun. Best is to do it again straight after. Then with the Gipfelbahn Fulseck I+II until the Fulseck and from there on the signposted road over to the Kieserl. (Pay attention: at the gondola mountain station, choose the first exit on the left of the building) The Kieserl will become the new turning point of the ski area Grossarltal-Dorfgastein. No surprise here, as it used to be the ‘great ski resort’ of the Grossarler.
  • On beautiful natural snowy slopes we enjoy the current downhill run to the Roslehenalm and then take the ski-trail to the middle station in Grossarl (when this road has not been pisted, only for practiced skiers). Further down, into the valley.
  • Hotel Auhof – Valley station Panoramabahn: Food and drinks is what keeps the body and soul together. Down in the valley, Hotel Auhof offers delicious refreshments in the new conservatory. And while you watch the hustle and bustle outside in front of the valley station, you can enjoy in peace and quiet the great views the restaurant offers.
  • Going on foot through the National Park: By Post bus, ski bus or by car you can go to Hüttschlag and further into the picturesque valley. Peace and quiet determine the pace here at the Hohe Tauern National Park. The nicest way to go around the park is by riding in a horse-drawn carriage (registration required) or you can go for a 2 km long walk through the snow-covered wintery landscape past a game enclosure to the ötzlsee. Return to the car park following the same road.
  • Taste of winners: On the right side of the valley you can find the Talwirt and the Bauernladenstüberl. The first one is most known for its ghoul mask exhibition in the basement and the national park exhibit ‘Bergwald’ on the first floor. This culinary delight should not be missed.
