UP – DOWN – AROUND – a great day!
When you have got the time one day and when the weather is great, the snow is perfect both on and off the slopes, then it is time to do a tour from St.Johann to Wagrain and back again. This tour is a combination between technical climbing assistance and one’s own muscle power.
So off we go with the touring skis (which of course are also great on the slopes) from the Bauhof (building yard) in St.Johann. The first part has been prepared with a snow-grooming vehicle, which is a nice easy route up to the Ötzmooshof. From there it is steep at first, then you head left, close to the summer path to the Kreistenalm. Now, you are properly warmed up, you can put your skins in your rucksack and a nice skiing path takes you to the bottom station of the Buchau lift.
From there you take a cable car to the peak of the Gernkogel. On the lift ride up you realise that you should really enjoy these north-facing slopes and the nice powder snow that is on the side of these slopes is a nice safe detour and a great experience. It is a very varied run down, which is steep in the middle part and flatter at the end.
Once again you take the cable car to the summit of the Gernkogel, this time in the sunshine to the Strassalm.
Actually I think that we have earned a little break now. Time to refuel with a quick snack and a drink in this cosy hut. Then it is time to put on the skins once again and now we take a large arc over the Hirschkogel lift to the Sonntagskogel.
This is then it with putting your skins on and taking them off again and it is all about the wonderful terrain to the bottom station of the Grafenbergbahn. One or another powder slope can also be discovered here! A great return route awaits you too. The skins stay in the rucksack now and you can enjoy all the lifts, without having to use any muscle power.
In order to get back to the starting point in St.Johann, the best option is to take the free ski bus from Alpendorf. You could of course turn right from the Sternhof and head back to the Bauhof (building yard).
The day has had everything: time alone on the ascent up through the snowy forest on the touring skis, wonderfully prepared slopes, tasty food at a mountain hut and great views of the surrounding mountains!
