The name ‘Sportgastein’ brings a certain image to mind, sports and physical activity are definitely among these, in the truest sense of the words ‘pure delight’ is definitely done justice. An absolute highlight is the gourmet – summit-breakfast at the covered aluminium ball with its own chef and an overall view at 2,700 meters above sea level! That will certainly taste good, no matter whether it is as a reward for getting to the peak of the Kreuzkogel or if it is to re-energise for the onwards journey. After a morning filled with snow on skis or in the backcountry, there will be a chance to catch some sun and enjoy the views from the sun terrace of Weitblick, which is located near the halfway-station. Enjoying a coffee or a refreshing glass of champagne while waiting on a later lunch break at 14:30 – a Gasteiner ski ‘hauben’ award winning meal in the ‘Valeriehaus’ which was named after the youngest daughter of the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Elisabeth.
THE HOTSPOTS OF THE TOUR:
- Gipfelsieg – Kreuzkogel: The views are breathtaking! White peaks as far as the eye can see and with an ascent that requires minimal effort, one can indulge in this view. A photo at the summit cross is a must!
- Gipfelfrühstück – Aluminiumkugel: Located directly at the mountain station – Every Wednesday, maximum of 12 people
A richly set table with rolls, spreads, salmon, ham and everything your sweet tooth or your spicy heart desires. Also sweet, is the chef who takes your egg orders, who instinctively knows what you would like.
- Weitblick – Sonnenterrasse: Coffee, Tea, Champagne…
The atmosphere in Sportgastein is a very special one. High up in the Alps, little trees and a lot of sun is what makes the views up there so spectacular. A real pleasure on the sunny terrace of the mountain restaurant ‘Weitblick’ which the name explains so well.

Valeriehaus in the valley: Partner of the Gasteiner Skihauben
In the year of 1889, the Valeriehaus was built by the German-Austrian Alpine Association as a refuge for climbers and hikers and as a starting point for crossing the main Alpine ridge to Carinthia. Today it’s not only a place for shelter, but excellent dishes are served here too.
