Ranggeln is a traditional martial art with Celtic roots, first documented in 1518 in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg in connection with ‘Hundstoaranggeln’ – a custom that has been listed as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2010. Over the centuries, it has developed into a competitive sport that remains closely linked to regional tradition and culture to this day. A good Ranggler needs technique, courage, skill and strength. It is not for nothing that Ranggeln is said to be the most honest test of strength among young men in the Alpine region. The winner is honoured with the title ‘Hagmoar’.
