Europe's oldest high mountain pilgrimage

The origins of the Almer Pilgrimage date back to 1635. According to legend, it was established by the people of Saalfeld as a token of gratitude for having survived several plague epidemics. Originally, the destination of the pilgrimage was Bad Dürrnberg near Hallein, whilst the Hirschau peninsula, with the Chapel of St Bartholomew, served as a stopover.

One of the most tragic events in the pilgrimage’s history occurred in 1688, when a boat carrying pilgrims capsized on Lake Königssee and 71 people drowned. Since then, the official route has ended at St. Bartholomä. In memory of those who lost their lives, a wreath is hung every year on the Falkensteiner Wand, which drops steeply down to the lake.

After the First World War, the tradition fell into oblivion, but was revived in 1951 on the initiative of the Maria Alm Traditional Music Band. That is why traditional tunes can still be heard today, sung and played by the participants and music groups, who create a special atmosphere along the route. The combination of nature, faith and music makes this event a unique experience
