In 5 minutes up at the peak? That is easy from the valley of Grossarl. Take off your skis or board at the Kreuzkogel mountain station and hike to the top over the snow-free paths. Best thing is to use your ski poles, this makes it easier and leave your hat or helmet on as it can be quite draughty.
After some more turns across the wide slopes of the ski area of Grossarl-Dorfgastein it is time for a stop. In the Gewohlfalm one of the quality-tested-huts of the ski amadé gourmet with regional specialties and all sorts of local delicacies on the menu. After a leisurely lunch break, the air is usually ‘out’ as the locals would say. Then there is another couple of runs before returning back to the valley. On foot or with the ski bus you are straight into the town centre to visit the ‘Troadkastn’ the new farmer’s shop which has lots of local delicacies, from the typical sour cheese to self-smoked bacon and even sweet Alrosenbluten honey. The ‘Kost-bar’, the new bistro in hotel Berg-Leben on the market square in Grossarl lets you end your unforgettable skiing-day on a high. Following the motto ‘It should go fast – it should taste good – it should taste real and honest’. Which is safe to say, is appropriate with regards to the day spent on the enjoyable route in Grossarl.
THE HOTSPOTS OF THE TOUR:
- Kreuzkogel – Gipfelglück. A 5 minute walk to Gipfelglück. Enjoy a short break from the everyday at the Kreuzkogel mountain station. Leave your skis on the edge of the slope and climb the walking path for about 5 minutes to get to the peak of the Kreuzkogel (tip: use your ski poles for better balance while ascending and descending. If you didn’t bring a hat or headband, leave your helmet on as it can get quite windy at the peak). When you get to the top you can expect to see a beautiful 360° panoramic view and breath-taking views of the high and low ‘Tauern’, across the Hochkönig to the Dachstein. Even the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, can be seen from this point. While the skiers down below are busily making tracks, you can enjoy the silence and the view from the peak.
- Gehwolfalm – well-deserved break: From the peak of the Kreuzkogel, you can take a swift break from your skis. Across the Sennleitn, the family run or the Giant Slalom, down to the Gehwolf Alm, one of the quality tested huts of Ski amadé with regional and local delicacies like the “Gehwolf-Burger with Meat from the own organic farm” or a “vegetarian Thai-Curry”.
- From the mountain to the centre of the village: After a day of skiing and it’s time for the muscles to relax, there is still time for some new discoveries. You can visit the village of Grossarl on foot or by taking the ski bus. At the ‘Troadkastn’, the new farmers shop in Grossarl where countless local delicacies await, from the typical ‘sour cheese’ to home-cured bacon to sweet Alpine rosebud-honey (open Tue,Wed,Fri,Sat).
