Practicing the Nordic sport at Austria’s biggest ski network? The cross-country skiing trails span 714 kilometres and five regions. That’s what makes Ski amadé a true paradise for cross-country skiers. 

The outdoor sport not only taxes all muscles in the body, it also reduces stress and clears your head. So, it’s not surprising that this Nordic winter sport is becoming increasingly popular. Especially on the perfectly groomed trails that are winding through the impressive mountain scenery of Styria and the Salzburger Land region. 

The spectacular settings of Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein, Gastein, the Hochkönig and the Grossarl Valley are perfect for gliding on two boards. Cross-country skiing rookies as well as Nordic pros and skating fans have plenty of options to choose from thanks to the extensive network of trails.

260 kilometres of cross-country ski fun at six resorts – that’s what awaits winter sports enthusiasts at Salzburger Sportwelt. A total of 40 trails offer perfect conditions.

One of them – the Tauernloipe trail with a length of 60 kilometres – connects all six resorts. Spectacular views included!

Ramsau am Dachstein: focal point of the nordic ski sport

In the cross-country skiing centre Ramsau am Dachstein there is something for everyone. 20 cross-country skiing circuits with different levels of difficulty for beginners and pros, lengths (up to 30 km) and altitudes leave nothing to be desired. With a total of 220 kilometres of trails, there is something for everyone. Many cosy refreshment stops directly on the trails will also spoil you with culinary delights.

Tip: The Nordic centre not only offers a full moon cross-country skiing experience, but also scores with a high-altitude trail on the Rittisberg.

Gastein - a valley that leads to new paths

Winter sports away from the hustle and bustle

In the Gastein Valley you can experience the sport on 40 kilometres of cross-country ski trails as varied as the landscape itself, the ideal outdoor fitness studio. On the unique high plateau of Sportgastein at 1,500 metres, you can marvel at the 3,000-metre peaks of the National Park. At the beginning of December, Sportgastein also hosts the spectacular prologue races of the Ski Classics for professionals and popular skiers. The Angertal has fairytale forest passages in store and in Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein you can enjoy the idyllic valley at night by floodlight.

Breathing some air aloft on the cross-country trails

You’d like to have a little cross-country skiing session in the evening? At night when the moon illuminates the nighttime trail, cross-country skiers can glide over the two tracks on the Hochkönig. What’s more, there are also high-altitude trails with a total length of 40 kilometres specifically for the Nordic sport.

25 kilometres of groomed cross-country pleasure await skiers in Grossarl and Hüttschlag. Alongside classic cross-country skiing, experienced Nordic winter athletes demonstrate their skills on a skating track. For sporty cross-country skiers, a circuit of approx. 2 km is technically snow-covered in Grossarl to guarantee even more snow safety.

Tip: On Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays, night owls can get excited about the floodlit nighttime trail in Hüttschlag and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Großarltal!

Becoming a cross-country pro in no time

The endurance and wellness sport needs to be learned too – and practice makes perfect, as we all know.

To make sure you effortlessly glide over the trails, there are courses for beginners, advanced and pros in Ski amadé. The cross-country ski instructors teach you everything you need to know from the right technique to the suitable equipment as well as some tips and tricks on how to finetune your skills.

Cross-country skiing

According to snow and weather conditions, you can choose from a great offer of cross-country trails. Along the river Enns or the "Dörferlanglaufloipe" Haus-Aich-Pruggern, the " Kufsteinloipe" in Weißenbach, or the "Sonnenloipe" in Birnberg, both classic and skating runners will enjoy it to the full.

In St. Johann in Salzburg there are two well-groomed trails at your disposal.

  • Plankenau Loipe: 6.2 kms (intermediate)
  • Alpendorf Loipe: 4 kms (intermediate)

You can find a third cross country trail on the mountain, directly situated next to the top station of the Alpendorf gondola (2,2 km - intermediate)

A direct connection to the Tauern loipe - leading for 50 kms through mainly easy, colourful terrain, e.g.: from Wagrain 12 kms (one stretch) hiking loipe to Kleinarl and into the Jägersee nature preserve. More information from Sport Obermoser
