Summer holiday in the Hochkönig region
Between Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach, summer shows its scenic side: with mountain lifts, alpine enjoyment, family adventures and trails that keep opening up new views around the Hochkönig.
Summer at the summit of emotions
Around the majestic Hochkönig, the villages of Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach come together to form a summer region where nature, exercise and enjoyment meet in a special way.
Anyone who loves hiking will find around 340 kilometres of marked trails. If you want to experience the mountains in a more sporty way, you can discover challenging climbing routes at higher altitudes or explore the region by bike. For e-bike tours, more than 20 charging stations are available. This makes it easy to connect villages, alpine pastures and viewpoints even on longer routes.
A typical feature of the Hochkönig is the special mix of mountain adventure and cuisine. The region’s 12 Kräuteralmen invite you to discover the taste of alpine summer. Since 2025, „The Taste“ winner Paula Bründl has shaped the culinary concept of the Kräuteralmen with specially developed dishes. That makes summer on the Hochkönig not only active, but also enjoyable.
Hiking at Hochkönig
The Hochkönig region is made for anyone who wants to experience summer step by step. Around 340 kilometres of marked hiking trails lead through alpine meadows, to mountain huts, up to higher altitudes and time and again to impressive views of the Hochkönig massif.
The offer is especially varied for long-distance hikers. The Königsweg covers 89 kilometres and 5 stages along the Hochkönig massif, through the Steinernes Meer and the Dientner Grasberge. On „Ach du grüne Neune“, you hike from Kräuteralm to Kräuteralm and combine exercise with culinary enjoyment. The Hochkönig Hüttenhüpfer leads from alpine hut to alpine hut and shows the region from its especially picture-perfect side.
Other long-distance hiking trails also pass through the region, including the Salzburger Almenwelt, the Via Alpina and the Pinzga’ Hatscha. So at the Hochkönig, you’ll find both short outings and multi-day tours with a real long-distance hiking feeling.
Biking in the Hochkönig region
You can also experience the Hochkönig region intensively on two wheels. The mountain panorama accompanies you on tours through the villages, to alpine huts and to scenic viewpoints around the Hochkönig.
For longer e-bike trips, the region offers more than 20 charging stations. That makes it easy to plan extended discovery tours too. Since summer 2025, the Königstour Bike has also led through the most beautiful corners of the region over three days as a special challenge.
Anyone who wants to experience the mountain in a playful and sporty way will find a suitable offer for families and active guests on the Natrun Resi Trail.
Family holiday at Hochkönig
For families, the Hochkönig region offers many summer experiences that can be reached directly by mountain lifts. The Prinzenberg Natrun in Maria Alm is a particularly varied family mountain. Highlights include the forest slide park, castle playground, forest ropes course and the 3-kilometre Natrun Resi Trail.
Toni’s Almspielplatz is also a popular destination for families. Children can play, explore and move freely in the mountains there. Around the Hochkönig, more experiences are added: the longest marble run hiking trail in the Alps, mountain carts, the Hochkönig swing park at Gabühel and the summer toboggan run at Biberg in Saalfelden.
In Dienten, things become legendary: with the audio guide, you can discover mysterious stories from times long past. The region combines exercise, play and stories into a summer holiday that stays varied for children and adults alike.
Cuisine and Kräuteralmen
The Hochkönig tastes like alpine pastures, herbs and regional cuisine. The 12 Kräuteralmen of the region are particularly characteristic. Here you can experience herbs, enjoy dishes with a regional character and combine your hike with a tasty break.
Since 2025, Paula Bründl, winner of „The Taste“, has brought new culinary ideas to the Kräuteralmen. Her specially developed dishes make the alpine summer at the Hochkönig even more special.
There are also lovely places to stop for refreshments along the mountain lifts. In the Wastlhöhe-Kollmansegg-Schneeberg hiking area, for example, Bürglalm and Zachhofalm invite you to enjoy rustic specialities.
Hochkönig Card
With the Hochkönig Card, a summer holiday in the region becomes even more varied. It offers numerous free attractions and discounts. This makes it especially easy to combine mountain lifts, family activities, nature experiences and excursions.
The card is a practical companion for anyone who wants to be active in Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach and discover as much of the region as possible.
