Summer holiday in Grossarltal
In Grossarltal, summer takes you up to alpine huts, peaks, lakes, and quiet moments in nature. Between Grossarl and Hüttschlag, you can experience the “Valley of the Alpine Pastures” actively, enjoyably, and close to the mountain world of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Summer in the Valley of the Alpine Pastures
Grossarltal is around 70 kilometers south of the city of Salzburg and includes the two municipalities of Grossarl and Hüttschlag. In summer, the region shows its especially enjoyable side: with many serviced alpine huts, scenic trails, and a mountain landscape that has its own character in every season.
It is no coincidence that Grossarltal is also called the “Valley of the Alpine Pastures”. 40 serviced huts offer hikers and mountain bikers homemade specialties. A snack on the mountain pasture here tastes like nature, tranquillity, and genuine hospitality. After that, the journey continues across blooming alpine meadows, to crystal-clear mountain lakes, or up to panoramic peaks.
Grossarl lies roughly in the middle of the valley and, in addition to many alpine huts, offers a large sports and leisure center with an adventure pool, sports facilities, and the GAUDI-Alm, Salzburg’s largest alpine playground. Hüttschlag is further back in the valley and, as a mountaineering village, is a place for peace, unspoiled nature, and challenging pasture and summit tours.
Hiking in Grossarltal
Grossarltal is a paradise for anyone who loves hiking. Trails lead from hut to hut, across blooming meadows, to mountain lakes, and farther up to panoramic peaks. With so many serviced huts, almost every tour also becomes a culinary experience.
In Grossarl, numerous hikes start toward alpine huts and viewpoints around Kreuzkogel, Fulseck, and Kieserl. In Hüttschlag, the Hohe Tauern National Park begins in Grossarltal. There you will find peace, relaxation, and unspoiled nature. Challenging tours lead, for example, to the Keeskogel or the Weinschnabel.
Another especially popular hike follows the Salzburg Alpine Pastures Trail. It leads from Gamskarkogel via Hüttschlag to Tappenkarsee and continues through the entire Grossarltal to Geisterberg in St. Johann Alpendorf or to Wagrainis Grafenberg in Wagrain.
Biking and trail experiences
You can also experience Grossarltal intensely by bike. Many tours combine sporting activity with nature and a stop at a mountain hut. The combination of mountain lift and descent is especially practical: up by cable car, out of the cabin, and straight into the trail experience.
The Singletrail Grossarltal offers nature and flow over 10.3 kilometers and 967 meters of elevation gain. Turn after turn, the route leads down into the valley and provides varied biking fun. For extra action on the mountain, a ride with the Mountaincart from Kreuzkogel to Harbachehütte is a great option.
Family holiday in Grossarltal
For families, Grossarltal offers many ways to enjoy summer together. In Grossarl, a large sports and leisure center with an adventure pool, sports facilities, and the GAUDI-Alm, Salzburg’s largest alpine playground, awaits.
With the Panoramabahn and the Kieserlbahn, families can easily reach higher ground. From there, trips to lakes, huts, and scenic viewpoints are easy to plan. The newly designed Himmelreich reservoir in Grossarl is a particularly lovely destination for families.
Cable car hiking also makes a day in the mountains with children easier to plan. Short distances, huts for refreshments, and the mountain lifts as a convenient start create good conditions for relaxed family time in the mountains.
Alpine enjoyment, nature, and mountain wellness
Summer in the alpine pastures is part of Grossarltal just like the peaks are part of the mountain world. 40 serviced huts make the region a special destination for everyone who enjoys hiking, biking, stopping for refreshments, and experiencing nature consciously.
At the alpine huts, you can expect homemade specialties and genuine hospitality. A snack on the mountain pasture here tastes different: more intense, more authentic, and right in the middle of nature. In the upper part of Grossarltal, the region shows its especially peaceful and natural side: Hüttschlag is a mountaineering village and lies at the beginning of the Hohe Tauern National Park in Grossarltal.
With the BERG-GESUND activity program, guests can take part in up to 11 guided tours each week.
